What I Learned After Starting Allergy Shots (and Why I Wish I Had Sooner)

I used to think allergy shots sounded like a lot. Weekly visits, actual injections, and a long timeline. It felt like a big commitment for something I wasn’t sure would work, so I waited. For years.

Every spring and fall, I powered through congestion, fatigue, itchy eyes, and foggy mornings. I tried rotating allergy meds. I kept windows closed, avoided going outside after mowing, and carried tissues in every jacket. Some days were manageable, but the symptoms always came back.

Eventually, I got tired of managing my allergies. I wanted to actually treat them.

Getting Started with Immunotherapy

When I spoke with my provider at Dakota Allergy & Asthma, they explained that allergy shots, also called immunotherapy, help your immune system develop tolerance to the allergens that trigger your symptoms.

Instead of just masking what’s happening, shots help reduce your body’s sensitivity to things like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. It was the first time someone explained the “why” in a way that made sense.

The process started with small injections once or twice a week. My dose increased slowly, and after a few months, I switched to monthly maintenance shots. It took some time, but it was worth it.

Why I Wish I Had Started Sooner

Now, I sneeze less. I rely on fewer medications. And I no longer dread certain seasons or weather changes. My allergies aren’t gone, but they’re manageable. I feel more in control.

Looking back, I wish I hadn’t waited so long. I spent years treating symptoms I didn’t have to live with.

If you’re wondering whether allergy shots actually work, my answer is yes. They take time and consistency, but they offer real relief, not just short-term fixes.
